2001-02 BOYS GOLF TOURNAMENT SERIES

Assistant Commissioner Cox reported on the general format, sites and other preliminary plans for the 2001-02 Boys Golf Tournament Series.  Assistant Commissioner Cox noted that last year’s Crown Point sectional is in need of a school to host this year’s sectional tournament.  A motion to approve the recommendations for the 2001-02 Boys Golf Tournament Series was made by Phil Hoskins; seconded by Linda Barnett; motion passed 19-0.

The state finals will be conducted under the same format as 2001 with Carmel, Hamilton Southeastern and North Central (Indianapolis) being the host sites for the semi-final games.  A motion to approve the recommendations for the 2001-02 Softball Tournament Series was made by John Williams; seconded by Dennis Eller; motion passed 19-0.

 

APPROVAL FOR SPONSORSHIP OF NFHS SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

Permission was requested by Commissioner Ress for the IHSAA to sponsor the IHSAA Sportsmanship Award, to be issued during the National Girls and Women in Sport Day luncheon.  Commissioner Ress also recommended this award be presented on an annual basis.  A motion to support National Girls & Women in Sports Day to become an award sponsor was made by Joseph Trimboli; seconded by Janis Qualizza; motion passed 19-0. 

 

NATIONAL FEDERATION LEGAL SEMINAR

Approval was requested for Commissioner Ress and IHSAA Attorney Robert Baker to attend the legal seminar sponsored by the National Federation on April 12-14, 2002.  This seminar will be conducted in Indianapolis.  A motion to approve the IHSAA’s participation in the NFHS’s legal seminar was made by Cecil Raymond; seconded by Joseph Trimboli; motion passed 19-0.

 

APPROVAL FOR EXECUTIVE STAFF AND BOARD MEMBERS TO ATTEND NFHS ANNUAL SUMMER CONFERENCE

Commissioner Ress requested permission for the executive staff and the Board of Directors to attend the annual meeting of the National Federation of State High School Associations in Boston, Massachusetts, June 28 – July 3, 2002.  A motion to approve this request was made by Cassel White; seconded by Michael Necesssary; motion passed 19-0.

 

SOCCER COACHES PROPOSALS

Greg Mauch of Fort Wayne Canterbury High School appeared before the Executive Committee to present the following proposals on behalf of the Indiana High School Soccer Coaches Association:

1.        Increase the number of regular season games from 16 games to 18 games.

2.        All post-season games be played on the recommended field size as specified by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

3.        Change the State Tournament from a one day event to a Friday/Saturday event.

 

VOLLEYBALL COACHES PROPOSALS

Gail Gripe of Lafayette Jefferson High School appeared before the Executive Committee to present the following proposals on behalf of the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Volleyball Committee:

1.        Teams should be allowed to practice at Sectional and Regional sites.

2.        Scoring for each team should be point-per-play (rally scoring) to 25 points.

3.        The length of a volleyball match should remain the best 2 out of 3 games.

4.        The State Championship Tournament should be a four week tournament if the number of matches allowed (25 matches, 2 tournaments) remains the same.

5.        Teams should be able to scrimmage another high school team after the first five days of the season.

 

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION REPORT

David Cranfill presented information regarding plans for the Centennial Celebration in 2003-04.

SPORTSMANSHIP

Assistant Commissioner Wynns reported on the unsportsmanlike conduct reports that the Association has received as of February 12, 2002.  A total of 899 unsportsmanlike reports have been filed in seven different sports.  The IHSAA Office has been in contact with schools receiving an excessive number of unsportsmanlike conduct reports.

 

LITIGATION REPORT

Attorney Robert Baker updated the Executive Committee on the current status of pending litigation against the Association.

 

PENALTIES ASSESSED

The following penalties were assessed for various violations of the IHSAA By-Laws:

 

Bloomington North High School

Commissioner Ress reported the following action as a result of a violation of Rule 15-1.2a.

1.        The Bloomington North boys basketball program is issued a warning.

2.        The three students who participated in a non-school sponsored basketball tournament shall be suspended for three contests. 

3.        The administration of Bloomington North is commended for its prompt reporting and handling of this matter.

 

Centerville High School

Commissioner Ress reported the following action as a result of a violation of Rule 9-13.

1.        The Centerville boys swimming program is issued a warning.

2.        Coach Rudy Sperling is reprimanded for permitting this violation to occur.

3.        The administration of Centerville High School is commended for its prompt reporting and handling of this matter.

 

East Chicago Central High School

Commissioner Ress reported the following action as a result of a violation of Rule 14-1.

1.        The East Chicago Central girls basketball program is issued a warning.

2.        The varsity girls basketball games worked by Humberto Jimenez versus Calumet, Hammond Noll, Hobart and Thorntown Township are to be forfeited.

3.        The Athletic Director is instructed to verify the validity of an official’s license prior to having them work a contest.

4.        The administration of East Chicago Central High School is commended for its prompt reporting and handling of this matter.

 

Elkhart Memorial High School

Commissioner Ress reported the following action as a result of a violation of Rule 15-1.2a.

1.        The Elkhart Memorial boys basketball program is issued a warning.

2.        The student athlete who participated in a non-school sponsored basketball game shall be suspended for three contests.

3.        The administration of Elkhart Memorial High School is commended for its prompt reporting and handling of this matter.       

 

Kokomo High School

Commissioner Ress reported the following action as a result of a violation of Rule 15-1.2a.

1.        The Kokomo boys basketball program is issued a warning.

2.        The student athletes who participated in a non-school sponsored basketball game shall be suspended for three contests.

3.        The administration of Kokomo High School is commended for its prompt reporting and handling of this matter.     

 

New Haven High School

Commissioner Ress reported the following action as a result of a violation of Rule 9-18.3.

1.        The New Haven wrestling program is issued a warning.

2.        New Haven is directed to take appropriate steps to educate their athletes and parents on basic IHSAA rules as a preventative measure to lessen the likelihood of this type of violation.

3.     The administration of New Haven High School is commended for its prompt reporting and handling of this matter.

 

Pendleton Heights High School

Commissioner Ress reported the following action as a result of a violation of Rule 14-1.

1.        The Pendleton Heights boys basketball program is issued a warning.

2.        Coaches Kevin Bates and Jerrid Robinson are reprimanded for allowing this violation to occur.

3.        The administration of Pendleton Heights High School is commended for its prompt reporting and handling of this matter.      

 

Terre Haute South High School

Commissioner Ress reported the following action as a result of a violation of Rule 9-18.3.

1.        The Terre Haute South girls basketball program is issued a warning.

2.        Terre Haute South is directed to take whatever action is necessary to prevent this type of violation from occurring.

3.        The administration of Terre Haute South High School is commended for its prompt reporting and handling of this matter.     

 

Westfield High School

Commissioner Ress reported the following action as a result of a violation of Rule 52-3c.

1.        The varsity boys basketball game versus Tri-Central High School is to be forfeited.

2.     The administration of Westfield High School is commended for its prompt reporting and handling of this matter.    

 

Yorktown High School

Commissioner Ress reported the following action as a result of a violation of Rule 14-1.

1.     The Yorktown boys basketball program is issued a warning.

2.     Coach Pete Milas is reprimanded for allowing this violation to occur.

3.        The administration of Yorktown High School is commended for its prompt reporting and handling of this matter.
